Important: The information on this page is based solely
on personal experience and is not to be taken as gospel. It is intended to be a
simple tool to get you started. Ultimately, you need to do your own research and
make your own decisions about what is best for you and your business.
Stay Focused
Making the move from employee to business owner requires much self-control when
it comes to focus. As an employee, you were required to be on time, keep personal
calls to a minimum, no online shopping, Facebook or computer games, etc. When you
make the move to business owner, it’s easy to say, “I can do what I want.” or “I
make my own decisions”. True, you do make your own decisions. You are in charge
of your destiny. It’s up to you how it plays out.
In your defense, it’s not entirely your fault. Somehow, the moment people find out
you don’t have to clock in anymore, they think you’ve surely found a money tree
and you no longer have to work. If you’re not careful, you will soon find yourself
grocery shopping, picking up the kids and taking them to your place of business
“while you work” and, most likely, getting them to soccer practice on time.
Tried, tried, tried…failed. Doesn’t work. Choose your business hours. You can do
this because, after all, you’re in charge. Once you’ve chosen those hours, treat
them as gospel. Stop and think before you agree to do something on a personal level.
Ask yourself, “Would I allow my employees to do this?” If the answer is no, then
don’t do it yourself. It’s important to remain focused on the task at hand, which
is making enough money to support yourself and/or your family.
People will want to stop by to hang out and shoot the breeze. While that’s very
kind of them to think of you, unless they plan on leaving your rent money on the
desk when they leave, you need to find a polite way to tell them you need to get
to work.
Focus, or lack thereof, is what is going to make or break you. Do the right thing.
Work when you’re supposed to be working. There is a reason why, when you worked
for someone else, you were required to be on time, keep personal calls to a minimum,
no online shopping, Facebook or computer games, etc.
